The Cultured Compass was born from moments that stayed with me long after the bags were unpacked. During one trip in particular, when I traveled to Sierra Leone, I found myself constantly managing schedules, calming frustrations, and fixing issues behind the scenes. I remember feeling exhausted and disconnected, watching moments slip by while I was carrying the weight of everyone else’s experience. I wasn’t fully present in a place I had dreamed of my whole life, and the disappointment of that hit me harder than I expected. In that moment, I realized how easily travel can become stressful instead of joyful, and I wondered why meaningful experiences so often feel out of reach.
That feeling stayed with me and guided the way I approached future trips. On a birthday trip to Houston, I slowed down, looked for the hidden gems, and focused on creating moments that truly mattered. Watching the joy, laughter, and connections unfold for everyone on that trip — and seeing them already planning a return before we’d even left — reminded me why thoughtful, intentional planning matters so much. Travel isn’t just about the destinations; it’s about how you feel throughout the journey, the memories you carry, and the confidence that comes from knowing someone has your back.
I’ve lived both sides of travel — the planner, who carries the responsibility for everyone else, and the observer, watching people feel stressed, lost, or disappointed by experiences that were supposed to be unforgettable. Those experiences inspired me to create The Cultured Compass: a service rooted in care, intention, and cultural connection. My goal is to make sure travelers never feel alone, confused, or unsupported. I want to replace stress with confidence, chaos with clarity, and missed moments with experiences that are meaningful, personal, and lasting….and memories that stay with you long after those bags are unpacked.
